Students enrolled in Highland’s Girls Academy are dually enrolled in APEX Learning. Simply put, dual enrollment allows our students to be fully enrolled in our school while simultaneously taking online courses through APEX Learning. In addition to the oversight and assistance provided by our HGA teachers, APEX Learning provides distance learning teachers, a quality computer-based curriculum, record keeping and multiple courses.
APEX Learning is accredited through the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), an accreditation division of AdvancED. The certificate of accreditation recognizes Apex Learning for promoting and maintaining a well-balanced education program and for exceeding standards considered essential for quality education and a quality education system that meet academic standards required by colleges and universities.
Apex Learning courses with instruction provided by Apex Learning teachers have been approved by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as meeting the requirements for establishing the initial-eligibility certification status for high school student-athletes wishing to compete in college. Please visit the NCAA website and enter Apex Learning as the school name to review the list of approved courses.
HGA/APEX Learning is the leading provider of blended and virtual learning solutions to the nation’s schools. Our digital curriculum provides an active learner experience that engages all students in rigorous coursework to prepare them for college and work. The standards-based digital curriculum — in math, science, English, social studies, world languages, electives and Advanced Placement — is widely used for original credit, credit recovery, remediation, intervention, acceleration and exam preparation.
Students get a consolidated view of daily assignments, curriculum overviews, due dates, subject reviews, and grades with this organizational feature geared to keep them on track. Teacher assignment screens allow them to edit, add, remove, or reorder assignments, as well as change due dates of projects and tasks to pace coursework appropriately or according to individualized learning plans.
Diagnostic testing in language arts and math allows teachers to identify content areas in which students need review, so students who previously failed a course can recover the credits they need to graduate without repeating the entire course.
More than 50,000 multimedia elements including audio and video files, challenging games, interactive exercises, a historical timeline, and integrated video clips reinforce concepts and offer in depth explanation of key points.
This user-friendly application allows students to hear selected passages or entire lessons to promote greater understanding by simply highlighting the text within the lesson.
Role-based access controls, automatic expiration, and other security features enforce and support a credible learning experience. Student computers are programmed to restrict all internet access with the exception of Academy related websites. In order to limit distractions and provide an environment conducive to learning students do not have access to email or social networking sites while attending Highlands.
For residents who graduate, our graduation ceremonies are a beautiful celebration of the transformation that has taken place in their life. The evening begins with a elegantly decorated dinner that is designed for the graduating students, their families, and invited guests. The graduation service directly follows dinner. Students are presented to the audience in appropriate fanfare. In honor of graduation our student choir and drama team each performs special selections. There are presentations of completion certificates and diplomas, with a special time for the student and family to share their story of the miraculous transformation!
